Recent trials in and around Oxford show how e‑bikes and e‑cargo bikes can help reduce car trips and make everyday travel easier for commuters and families alike.
A ZCOP‑backed e‑bike trial for school staff – called PowerPedals – gave participants a free 30‑day loan, alongside support with route planning and cycling confidence. Most participants replaced car journeys to and from work, many cycling several days a week, and a significant number considered buying or leasing an e‑bike at the end of the trial.
Alongside this, findings from the ELEVATE e‑cargo bike project highlight how electric cargo bikes can replace car trips for family travel, shopping and school runs, particularly in suburban areas. In real‑world trials, more than half of e‑cargo bike journeys replaced trips that would otherwise have been driven, with participants reporting benefits for wellbeing, family time and access to local destinations.
